P3: Planning

Rough script, brief, mind map, asset table

Format will I create my file? (wav, mp3, flac)

When exporting my sound files I must ensure the quality is the highest possible. Some examples of lossless or uncompressed files are WAV and FLAC. WAV is better than an MP3 file because an MP3 is compressed, which means quality is lower and file size is smaller. I must take this into account before deciding which export.

Types of microphones:

There are several types of microphones, each with their own unique characteristics and uses. Here are some of the most common types of microphones:

Condenser Microphone:

These are sensitive microphones that are commonly used in studio recordings, podcasts, and radio broadcasts. Condenser microphones are considered the most versatile recording studio microphones. The sensitivity of these mics makes them more effective than dynamic mics, making them great for recording vocals and acoustic instruments.

Lapel Microphones:

These are small, clip-on microphones that are commonly used in TV shows, news, documentary filming and live events, as well as more recently . They are intended to be hidden and can be attached to clothing, making them ideal for capturing dialogue from a distance.

Shotgun Microphones:

These are directional microphones that are commonly used in film and TV production as well as used on most modern Youtube videos. They are designed to capture sound from a specific direction and reject sounds from other directions, making it sound like studio quality.

These are just a few examples of the many types of microphones available. The type of microphone you choose will depend on your specific needs and the application you are using it for.

Audio File Formats:

Different audio file formats can impact the quality of the audio in several ways. Here are some of the most common audio file formats and how they impact audio quality:

WAV:

WAV files are uncompressed and have high audio quality, which makes them better for music production and audio editing because they carry more data. However, because they are uncompressed, they also take up a lot of storage space.

MP3:

MP3 files are compressed and take up less storage space than WAV files. However, because they are compressed, some audio quality is lost in the compression process. The amount of audio quality lost depends on the bit rate used to compress the file. Higher bit rates result in better audio quality, but also larger file sizes.

FLAC:

FLAC files are compressed, but they use a lossless compression that preserves all of the original audio quality. This results in high-quality audio files that take up less storage space than uncompressed files like WAV.

In general, the higher the bit rate and the less compressed the audio file format, the better the audio quality will be. However, it's important to to consider both audio quality and storage for different devices and softwares.

Mind map:

In this mind map, I generated ideas for different sounds that could be included in each scene of my animation. These sounds include volume, voice over, sound effects and software needed. General sounds I will be using will be of planets, spaceships and some characters.

My animation will not have dialogue however i could include it but creating a voice over on Adobe Audition and describe what is happening in the scene such as what the planets are and some statistics.

Sounds needed to include:

- Foley sounds

- Theme music

- Voice over

Planets:

I could include sounds such as a 'woosh' and vibrations as i have researched and found real sounds that planets make. This would create realism in my animation and would help portray the story.

Spaceship:

I could use a boost sound effect when the spaceship goes faster around the planets. This would show that the pace has increased. I could Increase and Decrease volume as the spaceship moves further away from the stage to create a sense of distance.

I could also use a 'woosh' on the spaceship to show that it is moving very fast.

I could use an electrified engine noise to show it is modern.

Characters:

There will be no dialogue because there are no characters featured in my animation.

Practice recordings

I created my own sounds using different objects in a soundproof area.

Materials needed

I will record the audio on Adobe Audition and save different sounds as separate files.

I have created a practice Foley track file on Premiere Pro before i begin production of my sound. I recreated the sounds from the Bing Bong scene on Inside Out.

Locations to record in

I will record inside in a sound proof room to minimise echoes. I will ensure there is plenty of soft furniture to absorb the sound.

I wouldn't record outside because there is a lot of wind and other noises like passing traffic or activity around the area. I will include this on the location recce.

Legal and ethical issues

I must ensure I follow legal and ethical rules when creating my audio as it is important to ensure the rights of others are respected and that audio creations are not used in a way that is not unethical.

Copyright

I must ensure that all material in my sounds are created by me, such as dialogue, music and sound effects. I will ensure i comply with copyright laws because i could get into a lot of trouble if I used content that didn't belong to me, which could have ranged from a strike on my sounds or to lawsuits that could create a bad image on my brand. Copyright in my adverts includes graphics, sounds, fonts, and even possible layouts.

Royalties

I must make sure any music I use is either royalty free or I pay for royalties to use, and just like the music, I must ensure all sound effects such as a 'whoosh' are all royalty or that I have paid for royalties. I used a subscription to epidemicsound.com which gives me full royalties to download and use all sound effects on that website as long as I don't publish to monetise.

Offensive language/behaviour

My sounds won't contain any speech therefore I don't have to follow rules and regulations around swearing. I must also ensure all sounds are mature and reasonable to make sure it is suitable to all groups of people, especially young children. According to Ofcom, my sounds must be lawful and must not contain any offensive material, the rule states that I must not contain anything that is likely to cause serious or widespread offense, and special care must be taken to avoid causing offense on the grounds of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability and age.

Violence

My animation doesnt contain any scenes with an actor so there are no dangerous or violent acts were committed during the production of my sounds and animation including fighting, arguing or harassments. This makes sure it can air on any own channels without any limitations. It also makes sure my brand looks professional.

Representation

My advert doesn’t specifically target one specific race, religion, gender or sexuality. This is great for my brand because because it means i can have a very wide audience, whether it be male, female, young, old, of ethnicity or even not or even from specific countries. I wanted to make sure it aimed at as wide of an audience as possible and i think i achieved this successfully by not including characters or specific locations.
